These test should not be performed by just anyone. In complex cases , a skilled electromyographer must be able to discern what to study as well as what not to study in order to make a diagnostic conclusion. Electrodiagnostic testing, aka, nerve testing or NCV/EMG as most people are familiar with, is an extension of the history & physical examination. Without a good history & physical, abnormalities can be missed during the study. Also a study must always include the needle emg portion which detects many pathologies that the nerve conduction portion cannot detect.
